Subaru announces the price of a BRZ

Published: 01 May 2012

£24,995. That's what Subaru have announced that its rather splendid and resolutely rear-wheel drive BRZ will cost, replete with new-car smell. But what d'you get for your money?

The details released today are thus. There are two models - the 2.0i SE and 2.0i SE Lux (yours for 27,995). You get a choice of a six-speed manual or, for £1,500 more, a six-speed automatic with flappy paddles. Both get a very snazzy limited-slip differential (great for skids, kids), full air conditioning, and a set of the debatable 17-inch rims pictured.

There's also (deep breath) electrically-folding door mirrors, keyless entry, push-button engine start, leather-trimmed steering wheel, parking brake and gearshift lever; and six-speaker stereo with CD, radio and iPod connectivity. Lux models get heated leather seats.

Any tasty goodies on the equipment list, then? Erm, no. There are two optional extras: Pioneer satellite navigation (£1,000) and special paint finishes (£500).

So comparatively cheap then, for a car that is, according to our man Paul Horrell, "a serious laugh". He was much taken with it, and we anticipate many takers when it finally goes on sale.

Still, times are tough. So if you're looking for cheaper thrills, we also recruited the Falken drift champions to handpick a selection of keenly-priced offerings that promise similar levels of sideways thrills. Albeit at the possible cost of reliability, safety, speed, and that new-car smell...
