A mind-boggling car that's in a different realm from conventional supercars

Good stuff

Speed, grip, noise, sheer force involved. Hard to catch your breath while driving

Bad stuff

Very expensive, helmet required at all times

Overview

What is it?

Lotus’s fastest ever production car and, perhaps more pertinently, its first all-new car since the Exige V6 in 2012. It’s not strictly all-new though, as underneath it has much in common with that Exige, but with no roof and doors it is at least conforming to the much-mentioned ‘add lightness’ stereotype.

It’s a light car, made lighter still, built on the Exige’s bonded aluminium platform and using its supercharged V6. Two versions are available: Road and Race, and you can probably guess the differences. Less weight and equipment, more power and downforce. Also a racing sequential gearbox to justify the serious step-up in price from £82,500 to £116,500.

What's the verdict?

Lotus turns the track-day car up to 11. Still drives well on-road. Remarkable.
