Top Gear’s Classified of the Week

Published: 16 Mar 2012

The current hubbub surrounding Schuey might be about his form, but here's a slice of yellow history that helped earn him such debate: his old 1992 Benetton F1 car, and it's TG's Classified Of The Week.

Of course, when we say ‘his', we do of course mean the car he and Martin Brundle drove in the 1992 Formula One season. It was Schuey's first ‘proper' season in the sport, having previously done only a handful of races in 1991.

He signed for Benetton in 1992 and partnered Brundle in a car designed by Ross Brawn, the man who would ultimately become his mentor and co-conspirator in achieving world championship glory with Benetton and Ferrari.

But that was yet to come. For the 1992 season, Schuey and Brundle had a mixed bag of results: Brundle would hover around third and fourth, and scored a 2nd placed finish at Monza, while Michael had a few retirements and a 7th placed finish in Portugal.

But a couple of races before, he struck gold, and won his first ever grand prix at his favourite circuit, Spa, in Belgium. So, dear readers of Top Gear's Internet, that yellow-hunk of memorabilia you're staring at could well be the first car in which Michael Schumacher won a Grand Prix.

It's powered by a 3.5-litre Ford V8, features a carbon fibre monocoque, double-wishbone pushrod suspension and most importantly, acted as the foundation for the later Benetton cars that would ultimately see Michael Schumacher become a world champion.
