An international charging nightmare in our Jag I-Pace
It should've been simple. Drive from London to Folkestone. Hop on the Channel Tunnel train. Drop passengers in Lille, then on to a meeting north of Paris, where I knew I could recharge for the return to Lille. Simple.
For the outbound trip that's 70 miles in the UK and 186 miles in France. In advance I'd spent an hour scouting charger maps.
The plan was to use the Eurotunnel terminal charger to get back to near 100 per cent, before crossing under the Channel. Then another top-up using the French autoroute charging network.
Reality wasn't so simple. The charger at Folkestone wasn't working. I got to France with too little charge, but still had enough to drop the passengers in Lille and set off south. But I'd scouted autoroute chargers, so wasn't worried.
First autoroute charger was dead. Things didn't look so rosy now. I went south to the next junction and back north again to the opposite-side services. Ah, that one was also dead.
So I phone the charger company, to be told their whole network was out that day. (The same happened to me once with the UK's Electric Highway network.)
I now had just enough charge to limp back to Lille and found an overnight charger. I never made Paris.
