Interior

What is it like on the inside?

The Corolla’s interior is the bit that betrays its budget-friendliness the most. It's not so much the spartan nature - in fact we quite like the way everything is tightly compartmentalized and easy to access - there’s just the sensation of dollar-saving that permeates throughout. The veneer between stamped-out metal tub and a standard level of comfort is quite thin, and you feel like you’re getting what you paid for without too much tricking your mind that you’re getting more than that at first glance.

But you are, though, right?

Believe it or not, you’re getting plenty. While the Corolla is light on frills, it covers the bases and then some. We’re particularly thankful that the bang you're getting for your buck includes a whole batch of safety tech, and that’s across the Corolla lineup. It starts with a collection of digital safety stuff like start-stop tech, stability control and all those usual things, but also throws in 10 airbags, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane-keep assists and dynamic cruise control. The one “extra” safety doodad is blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and though it’s an option for the lower trims, it’s included in the others.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility is included, and Toyota’s connected services is available with a subscription, but it has a whopping 10-year “trial” period, so you have a decade to figure out if it’s worth it. This includes emergency services contact, location tracking due to a theft, vehicle health monitoring and remote connecting functions.

What’s the cargo capacity?

You can seat four in relative comfort, five in a pinch, and all involved will be content, save for that fifth person who drew the short straw. For those who like math, that’s 88.6cu ft of passenger volume, with 13.1cu ft of cargo space in the rear. This translates to a decent amount of trunk space for luggage, groceries or 13 cubes.
