This MOT-free and tax-exempt Datsun Sunny pickup truck could be yours for £7.5k
Gloriously rare, moderately clean Japanese truck is coming up for UK auction
Here is a really old Japanese car for sale with a tiny engine and a small footprint. It is a B20 Datsun Sunny truck, and it could be just the cheer you need this summer.
Because this gloriously rare and, frankly, gloriously tiny slice of Japanese metal is coming up for auction via Car & Classic with a reserve price of just £7,500. The auction doesn’t start until 16 August, but one suspects you’ll be pre-bidding almost immediately.
We’re told this particular Sunny truck was found in “deep storage” in a South African Datsun museum where it was apparently well looked after. It was recently imported into the UK by the current owner and is described as being “mostly original”.
The 998cc engine (!) starts, runs and motivates the Sunny truck’s diminutive stature – all 3.8m of it, meaning it’s shorter than a Ford Fiesta – while the engine bay looks… about what you’d expect of a car originally built in 1970.
The drive belt apparently needs replacing, true, but otherwise “no known mechanical issues were reported” from either the engine or four-speed gearbox. Paint? Fine. Bit of bubbling here and there. All the trims, rubbers and seals are still… trimming and sealing. It’s got 13s that could use a spit and polish, maybe throw on some new tyres, but look, it’s an old pickup.
The interior will need a once over, with some corrosion and age-related wear visible, and there’s no radio, but look! It’s got “modernised seats”! All the electrics apparently work, and out of the factory it came with a speedo (handy), temp and fuel gauges (also handy), and an oil pressure light.
It’s been SORN since May 2022, is registered as a Historic Vehicle and is therefore MOT- and tax-exempt in the UK. As we said, the auction is accepting pre-bids right now, kicking off proper on 16 Aug and finishing on 21 Aug. Happy hunting.
