This modified Datsun 240Z just sold for over $120,000
Bring a Trailer’s 100,000th listing was a 240Z charity sale, and it went for big money
American auction website Bring a Trailer recently celebrated its 100,000th listing by selling one of the ‘event cars’ used by its staff.
Now, that may sound rather tame for such a big milestone, but then you learn that the staff runaround was a brilliantly modified 1973 Datsun 240Z. Oh yes. Well, you can hardly expect a team working in that industry to knock about in a fleet of generic crossovers, can you?
And it would seem the buying public liked the 240Z too, because after much bidding it eventually sold for a massive $124,240.
And yes, we did say that it was modified, so here goes. The engine is a numbers-matching original, but it has been bored and stroked from 2.4 to 2.7-litres. It’s also fitted with triple Weber side-draft carbs with K&N filters and a dyno run apparently shows it making 203bhp and 190 lb ft of torque.
There’s a Z Car Garage big brake kit too, plus Eibach springs and Tokico Illumina adjustable struts, whilst the gearbox is a five-speed manual from a later 280ZX. There’s also a limited-slip diff, an Alpine sound system and an aftermarket exhaust. Oh, and those are 16-inch Panasport wheels and the paint is apparently Lime Yellow from a respray in 2005.
We’re told that Bring a Trailer staff used the Datsun for rallies, road trips and displays, and that the odometer is showing just over 44,000 miles, although the listing did state that “total mileage is unknown”. Still, it looks rather lovely, doesn’t it? And all of the money raised from the sale will all be donated to the Piston Foundation – a nonprofit that helps students gain the skills to work in the collector car industry.
So, what do we reckon the 200,000th listing will be folks? And just how much will that sell for?
