Maserati announces track-only 730bhp Project24 racer

Maserati has announced it is to build just 62 versions of the MC20 supercar that won’t be fit for the public highway. Welcome to the latest in a long line of track-only toys that promise serious fireworks.

It’s called the Maserati Project24, built to “raise the brand’s unlimited performance to a new level of adrenaline on the track”. Read: scare customers senseless, make good noise.

To wit, this rather striking new Maserati race car, built around the road-going MC20 architecture, will feature a new set of turbochargers bolted onto the new ‘Nettuno’ 3.0-litre V6. Power rises from 621bhp in the road car, to 730bhp. Dry sumped, too.

That engine is matched to a six-speed sequential racing gearbox and a limited slip diff, sending those horsepowers to the rear wheels. Performance should be sprightly, especially considering Maserati has binned most of the MC20’s comforts and targeted a weight of less than 1,250kg.

It features adjustable dampers and anti-roll bars, vented Brembos, 18in aluminium alloys, the obligatory interior racing paraphernalia (racing seats, steering column, pedal box, harness and so on), wrapped up in a new carbon-fibre body featuring much aero, much downforce and much wing. 

“Maserati design pushes the boundaries to the limits, free of the constraints usually seen in a racing car,” Maserati said. Can’t argue with that.

At least judging by these official renders. We’ll report back when something more tangible emerges.
