Graham Hill’s F1 trophies are going under the hammer
Including - for the first time ever - a World Driver’s Championship trophy
Just days after Nigel Mansell’s personal racing memorabilia went to auction - fetching something like £2 million, by the way - another F1 champ’s stuff is going under the hammer.
RM Sotheby's has announced next month’s auction of The Graham Hill Collection, which comprises 59 lots from the two-time F1 champion and Triple Crown winner’s glittering career.
Most noteworthy (and dare we say, expensive) is Hill’s 1962 FIA Drivers’ World Championship trophy, the first time such a thing has ever been offered publicly. It’ll be sold without reserve, but carries an estimate of £25-35k.
There’s also Hill’s 1st place trophy from the 1969 Monaco Grand Prix, which could fetch £50,000: Hill was a five-time winner of the race - earning him the nickname Mr Monaco - and again this is thought to be the first time a Monaco winner’s trophy has been auctioned off.
Other lots include a helmet (£20-30k) inspired by HIll’s rowing club, ‘rare’ racing overalls (£8-12k) and the glass trophy Hill was awarded for winning Le Mans alongside Henri Pescarolo driving a Matra-Simca MS670 in 1972.
There’s not much from the Indy 500 sadly, save for a painting, some glasses and the winner’s cheque from 1966. The latter was written out for $12,500 but now carries an estimate of £250-400: presumably you can’t take it to the bank and pocket the profit.
Finally, there’s also some evidence that whoever owns the items currently is having a thorough clear-out… any takers for the Daily Express Sportsman of the Year Runner Up Award trophy? Yours for as little as £100.
Bidding is set to begin at 2pm on Saturday 4 November as part of RM Sotheby’s London auction. You can browse all the lots by clicking this here hyperlink.
