Sir Lewis Hamilton’s first race-winning Mercedes F1 car is coming up for auction
The W04 that gave Hamilton his first of many Merc victories is expected to fetch at least £8m
This is rather special. Lewis Hamilton’s first race-winning Mercedes F1 car is coming up for sale. Wonder how much the monthly finance payments will be?
The W04 from 2013 is far from the prettiest F1 car ever, but clearly it’s rather significant. This very car is chassis number four – the car that put Lewis on pole and then on the top step of the podium at the Hungarian Grand Prix during a season that was completely dominated by Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel.
As previously mentioned, that was Hamilton’s inaugural win for the struggling Mercedes team after his surprise move from McLaren earlier in the year. It would end up being his only win that season too, but you all know what happened from 2014 onwards…
The W04 was the last of the Merc F1 cars to feature a naturally aspirated 2.4-litre V8, with the team absolutely nailing the V6 hybrid powertrain that followed. But although this car never won a title, the significance of what it started will mean it should fetch a fair few pennies when it crosses the auction block at RM Sotheby’s official auction at the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
In fact, it’s estimate is between £8m and £12.5m. Yikes.
We’re told this is the only Hamilton-driven Mercedes F1 car available for public purchase, and it’ll be joined at the auction by Tom Brady’s final match-worn jersey which has an estimate of north of £1.25m. Apparently, he was quite good at American Football.
Still, not to be rude to Mr Brady, but we think we’d take the 800bhp+ F1 car over a sweaty t-shirt…
