What should Britain's new 'iconic' EV chargers look like?

Government commissions RCA to design recognisable British chargepoint… but what do you think?

Published: 11 Aug 2021

Red post boxes. London buses. Black cabs. All examples of iconic British design, we’re sure you’ll agree. But there’ll be a new landmark, in the shape of electric car chargers.

That’s because Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has recently announced the appointment of the Royal College of Art (RCA) and PA Consulting to deliver an iconic British chargepoint design. A bolt of lightning, perhaps? A three-point plug? An AA battery?

"Excellent design plays a key role in supporting our transition to zero emission vehicles, which is why I want to see EV chargepoints that are as iconic and recognisable as the British phone box, London bus or black cab," said Shapps. Those existing chargers must be shocked to their core.

The newly designed chargers will be revealed ahead of November’s COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, and could potentially be seen on our streets as early as next year.

So, internet, what would you like to see? Thoughts in the comments section below.
