The Pininfarina Battista has some clever roaming services

Ignore range anxiety. This electric hypercar wants to be your next grand tourer

Published: 16 Nov 2020

Planning a big drive spanning several countries in your new electric hypercar? Well, we’ve got some good news for you. The Pininfarina Battista will now automatically connect and search for the strongest network, in over 50 countries across the world.

Ignoring the logistic issues (and likely range anxiety) of stretching the legs of a plug-in supercar across continents; it’s all part of a new partnership with communications company Deutsche Telekom and its extensive roaming partner network.

In simple terms, it means every Battista will receive an embedded SIM and roaming technology offering worldwide online connectivity without the need to connect to Wi-Fi, much like your phone works when you go abroad. It automatically selects which partner network has the strongest connection in an area and swaps to that network.

Online services include over-the-air updates to any of the Battista’s 26 electronic control modules, including functions covering the pure electric powertrain, advanced safety and driving dynamics systems, vehicle control, infotainment and digital services. Which, when you’re packing nearly two thousand horsepower, we guess is important.

The Battista’s Smart Diagnostics technology, which monitors the vehicle to spot potential issues before they arise, will also continue to operate on the move. Pininfarina says that if any potential issue cannot be dealt with by a software update, it will send an engineer to resolve the issue, wherever the vehicle is in the world.

Using the smartphone app, owners will also be able to remotely lock and unlock the vehicle, view vehicle telemetry, check the state of charge and monitor its location. Which means no chance of losing it in a car park. And that’s very good news indeed.
