The Mustang GT500CS is a Singer-style British restomod

British tuner and supercar dealer Clive Sutton’s new project: £300k, 520bhp classic 'Stangs

Published: 17 May 2018

Want a restomod that isn’t – yes, that’s right – isn’t based on an old Porsche 911? Well, your luck’s in – if you’ve got a £200k-£300k budget. Yep, restomods don’t come cheap. But British supercar dealer and sometime car tuner Clive Sutton has graduated from merely giving the new right-hand drive Ford Mustang unholy amounts of supercharged power, and is attempting to follow in the footsteps of Singer’s reimagined Porsche 911s…

The GT500CS is the result. This first example is based on a 1967 Fastback chassis, but virtually every component has been restored or modified. Once the chassis has taken a 360-degree spin on a rotisserie job, brand-new body panels are applied, finished in paint hues from Ford’s 2018 palette, not its 1967 selection (though we’d imagine you could have whatever colour scheme you like – leopard print, Peppa Pig, you name it).

Following the modern trend for deleting chrome (Audi black pack, anyone?), the exterior brightwork’s been toned down with a powder-coating satin-black finish, matching the 18-inch alloys.

Behind that handsome mug lives a V8, naturally, but this isn’t the 320bhp V8 that purportedly powered Frank Bullitt’s company car. Sutton likes a tuned Mustang, and the 5.4-litre V8-powered GT500CS has been fettled for 520bhp, courtesy of motorsport-spec pistons and a beefier camshaft.

Sutton says it’s fitted a limited-slip differential and ‘modern’ manual gearbox – though it’s hardly state of the art, with only five forward speeds. Not that you’ll be short of punch for the odd overtake, we imagine. Making life easier for wealthy millenials who fancy an old-school ‘Stang is power steering and contemporary disc brakes all round.

Inside, it’s basically a complete overhaul. New dials, a carbon dash and console surrounded by all-new Nappa leather, and touchscreen nav with Apple CarPlay. The latest Mustang has also donated its (lazy) traction control, Line Lock burnout feature, and air-conditioning. You get Recaro bucket seats, though this GT500CS is unique with its custom Mota-Lita steering wheel.

For said model, you’d be asked to cough up £250,000. Sutton says it expects each example, which takes 10 months to produce, will cost between £190,000 and £300,000, depending on spec.

So, it’s potentially a lot cheaper than the a Porsche 911 reimagined by Singer – and it’s just as topical (2018 marks 50 years since the Bullitt movie chase, and Porsche’s 70th birthday.)

Form an orderly queue…
