The Outlander PHEV has a brilliant ‘bird’s eye’ reversing camera, allowing you to slot into a supermarket parking space with millimetric precision. But this set-up does not – unless I’ve missed a submenu of a submenu, which I’m pretty sure I haven’t – give any audible warning that you’re about to hit something. This is only really an issue if (a) the cameras are smudged by dirt or rain, or, more pressingly, (b) you’ve assumed you do have bleepers, and are reversing at pace without checking the screen.
Apparently this cameras-no-bleepers set-up is quite common in the States, but I’ve never seen it over here. It’s intriguing as, when you do pretty much anything else in the Outlander, it’ll reward you with an cacophony of bleeps and bongs.
