Mercedes-Benz GLC (2016-2022) review
Buying
What should I be paying?
The plug-in hybrid GLC is the friendliest of the tax-friendly models. The 300 e doesn't quite dip underneath the 50g/km threshold so you'll be paying £10 for the first year and then £155 annually after that, whereas the 300 de - with emissions of 49g/km - escapes road tax indefinitely. Either way, the prospect of electric-only driving over short distances could save you a lot of money in the long run.
AMG-line trim comes with 19-inch rims, AMG Sports suspension, the bodykit, and huggier seats. Even Sport models are usefully equipped, with self-parking and reversing camera, the duo of big screens inside, heated front seats, tinted rear glass and 18-inch wheels, which noticeably round off the ride’s coarser edges.
Higher powered versions unlock AMG Premium Plus and AMG Line Ultimate trim, which adds extras like a Burmester hi-fi with beautiful intricate speaker grilles, keyless go, and electric memory seats. For driving in the UK’s congested cities and contra-flow-ridden motorways, we’d recommend the £1,695 Driving Assistance Package, for its active steering and blind-spot helpers. It’s by no means an autonomous car, but the safety net is a welcome one.
