Lexus GX (US) (2010-2023) review
Driving
What is it like to drive?
Lexus has nicely addressed the previous GX’s tendency to rock and roll when driving on twisty roads. The car is now noticeably more stable and passengers less queasy. The steering is still fairly lifeless, though, one of the trade-offs of this type of truck, which gives the driver little to no road feel. On the plus side the turning circle of this large truck is way tighter than you’d imagine.
The cabin is well insulated from the outside, the drivetrain and the chassis. So you proceed in a generally serene manner. Never sporty, as that feels very out of character, but briskly and confidently. The engine and transmission are definitely tuned for comfort and economy rather than performance, the gearbox seeking the highest possible gear whenever the opportunity arises.
We didn’t get to try out the GX’s new off-road kit this time, but just looking at the bodywork overhangs makes us suspicious of just how adventurous you could be before hearing the sound of crumpling metal. We’d suggest some shorter bumpers for anyone wanting to take full advantage of the low-range transfer case and locking center diff.
