Prices start at £41,755 for the 40 TFSI, £45,810 for the 40 TDI and £46,880 for the 45 TFSI, before there’s a sizeable jump to the hybrid, with the 50 TFSI e starting from £56,665. On lease you’re looking at around £540, £580, £625, and £750 on a four-year agreement with a six-month down payment.

That’s before you get to the £64k S6 Avant and £110k RS6 mega-wagon. The heartland models are priced in line with the equivalent Mercedes and BMW, so unless you come across or can negotiate a particularly good deal, cost shouldn’t be too much of a factor in your decision-making process.

What's the kit like?

In order of expense (and therefore equipment) the range goes Sport, S Line, Black Edition and Vorsprung. 

S Line and Black Edition are similar to Sport in terms of equipment, but they get bigger wheels, different bumpers, smarter trim and that stiffer suspension we mentioned earlier. Vorsprung, meanwhile, gets pretty much every bit of equipment Audi has in its arsenal.

There aren’t many standalone options, so if there’s a specific bit of kit you want, odds are you’ll have to step up a whole trim level at great expense. 

And if it was your money?

We’d likely go for the standard 2.0-litre petrol, quiet and refined around town and with enough oomph to make motorway journeys drama free, in standard Sport trim, which gets you regular suspension but avoids the slightly lower, stiffer setup found in upper spec models.

All in, you’re looking at £41,755 for the 40 TFSI or £46,880 for the slightly more powerful 45 TFSI, our preferred choice. The standard warranty is three years/60,000 miles, but you can extend to four years/75,000 miles or five years/90,000 miles for £630 and £1,465 respectively.
