All we want for Christmas is an Adventure Truck

We've been good this year, honest. Now please send an off-roading V8 camper van

Published: 14 Dec 2018

Forget selection boxes full of criminally undersized chocolate and socks with inexplicable festive glitter on them; all we want for Christmas is an Adventure Truck.

That’s what you see here. Made by a company called Global Expedition Vehicles (GXV), the Adventure Truck can be based on a RAM 5500 or Ford F-550 pick-up in either single or double cab form. So whatever the case, you’re getting an engine boasting over six litres of capacity, with the potential for there being a Hemi V8 petrol underneath if you’ve picked a RAM.

Onto the back of that pick-up GXV has plonked what’s essentially a fibreglass studio flat, with sleeping space for two, a kitchen and a bathroom. When you’re buying a car where a microwave is on the options list, you know you’re buying into something pretty special.

And you really should spec the microwave, because the places a vehicle this rugged will take you are the kind that aren’t overrun with Michelin star restaurants. Or even scummy kebab shops.

Helping power your Micro Pizza-heating machine is a fleet of solar panels on the roof, capable of storing 20,000 watt hours of energy. We’re not entirely sure how long that’ll last, and it’s not the only number that slightly bewilders us. The Adventure Truck also stores 100 litres of fuel, 90 gallons of fresh water and 26 gallons of grey water. That’s a very polite term for sewage water, it transpires.

We’re so desperate to scale a mountain in one of these it’s untrue. All we need is to save up a little more to achieve the $198,000 (£160,000) needed. Or hope that Santa Claus has a vast budget and one really does land under the tree this year. Yeah, we’ve got an extra big tree just in case…
