Want to build a Lego E30 BMW M3?

Hardly a month goes by without a performance car cast in Lego doing the rounds online. No surprise, really, when the Danish brick dealer made a Caterham 620R model after a fan proposed one via Lego Ideas.

The latest to gather some momentum is the BMW M3 in its iconic, original E30 form. As an idea, it’s fantastic. In reality, it probably needs some polishing, but there’s a lot of promise here. Particular highlights are its ingenious solution for a handbrake, the choice of sunroof (glass, body coloured, or, um, no sunroof) and differing wheels and tail lights.

Its maker Dani87 can also be proud of how those wondrous boxed wheel arches have been replicated, the attention to detail in the engine bay and beneath the car, and the neat rear wing. The red car, if you're curious, is designed to be more 'Lego look'.

We wonder, though: how many car proposals are too many? Do you want to be able to buy iconic cars in pre-designed form, with instructions? Or is the core of Lego’s appeal that you figure out how to make your favourite car yourself?
