Jaguar's Project 8 saloon has broken another record

The wild, 600bhp XE four-door laps Laguna Seca in 1m37.5s

Published: 13 Sep 2018

The Jaguar XE SV Project 8 is already racking up the Wikipedia lists it appears in, having claimed the fastest production saloon lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7m21.2s last November.

Now it can claim glory over the 2.2-mile Laguna Seca raceway in California, lapping it in 1m37.54s. The 592bhp, 200mph saloon beats the previous saloon lap record by almost a second, with four-times SCCA World Challenge GT champion Randy Pobst taking to the wheel.

It's a mere six days since we found out another four-door - the silent Lucid Air electric car - put in a 1m39.30s around Laguna Seca, and it's fair to assume that while the Project 8 was marginally quicker, it was MUCH louder.

Jag's 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine isn't known for being meek and mild, and the Project 8 is its lairiest tune yet. Jag's SVO devision also added F1-style ceramic wheel bearings and adjustable camber before removing the back seats, among many other tweaks that seperate it greatly from the diesel XE on your company car list.

See how the Project 8 fares against rival BMW C3 CS in our twin test.
