Classified of the week: Ford Mustang

Published: 30 Mar 2012

You - yes you - are not allowed to drive a highland green Ford Mustang GT 390 Fastback, because You Are Not Steve McQueen and you will therefore look like a desperate try-hard.

However, you are allowed to drive another Ford Mustang, and if your budget cannot simply stretch to the £125,000 Shelby 1000 revealed earlier this week - that 950bhp steroidal stallion - how about something a little more...orange?

May we present to you TopGear.com's completely spurious but utterly compelling Classified of the Week: a 1970 Ford Mustang ‘Grabber'.

The original Grabbers - an unfortunate name, you will agree - were sold to promote the Mustang's then new colour options, boasting a palette of subdued, restrained and understated hues like GRABBER GREEN! and GRABBER BLUE! and GRABBER YELLOW!

This one for your consideration was resprayed in original GRABBER ORANGE! (or Calypso Coral, you pedant) in 2012, along with the Grabber SPECIAL VALUE PACKAGE, which included a front air dam, a shaker hood scoop, new ‘C' stripes, colour-matched racing mirrors, a rear deck spoiler and a blacked out rear panel.

It's had around twenty thousand of our Great British pounds spent on it, and thus runs on new Cragar SS wheels with Goodrich tyres, features a new interior with vinyl seats and new door cards, new componentry such as shocks and bushes, brakes, a new exhaust and even power steering, as well as a fully rebuilt 5.0-litre Windsor V8 (302ci). You're talking 280bhp, running through a reconditioned four-speed manual ‘box. Delicious.

This special edition also comes with a ‘Marti Auto Works' report verifying its authenticity. Marti, for those who spend far too much time looking at an Internet, is a gentleman who has dedicated his time to documenting the Grabber editions. So he knows lots.

Not only that, but this particular example has also recently been used "for a forthcoming blockbuster film" starring none other than Johnny Depp, set to be released in the coming months. So if you see it on the big screen this summer, you know where you saw it first...
