This American Le Mans-winning Porsche RS Spyder is for sale
Welcome to the latest auction delicacy from the pricey end of the menu
Endurance racing, by its very nature, is hard. Probably harder than any other kind of racing, to be honest. And if the world were just and fair in any kind of way, endurance racing would be the dominant top tier of the sport. And then you could... hear Crofty talk about tyres for 12 hours instead of just two. So maybe in this case, things are better as they are.
It’s probably also why a car as incredible as this Porsche RS Spyder Evo is even coming up for sale, let alone for an estimate of less than eight figures. Even though the car you see here has two outright and four class wins in the American Le Mans Series – and contributed to another Porsche-dominated season – Gooding & Company suggests a price guide of between six and eight million US dollars, or about £5,000,000 to £6,600,000 at current exchange rates.
And sure, that’s a lot of money, full stop, let alone for a car you can’t drive on the road or likely even run without a pit crew. But when we’re talking about a custom-built Porsche race car (never going to be a bad thing from the outset) with a 3.4-litre V8 that belts out 503bhp at more than 10,000rpm, any quandaries about price and practicality pretty quickly fall away, replaced by something much more useful.
Yes, we know it’ll be hard to stomach after spending so many millions to buy it, but please, oh please, will the new owner take it out on track and film it for the rest of us?
