The all-new Ford Expedition introduces a Tremor model and a number of utility upgrades
Keeping up with the Joneses? Try the Swiss Family Robinson
Drivers of great big family SUVs often make their vehicle purchase with dreams of taking the whole brood off on grand adventures, but instead find themselves parked at soccer practice more often than not. Still, it looks like Ford’s redesigned flagship SUV is set up to be the best choice for both. Bring plenty of orange slices.
For 2025, the Ford Expedition receives a complete exterior and interior overhaul, updated tech and introduces a full Tremor off-road model for the first time.
The Tremor nameplate is reserved for off-road ready versions of its vehicles like the F-150, so we’re excited to see what it means for the full-fat three row utility vehicle. This model ups the power from the standard 3.5-liter Ecoboost (turbo) V6 from 400hp to 440hp and also provides 510lb ft of torque. The all-wheel drive SUV gets Raptor-style running boards and a front skid plate, and elements of the chassis have also been borrowed from the Raptor lineup to make the platform more sturdy.
Its suspension and power steering have also been re-tuned for better performance off the beaten path, with the software to back it up included for better performance over various terrain.
Among the number of upgrades, the most eye-catching is the 24in panoramic driver display showcased in the interior. It’s similar to what’s found in SUVs from Lincoln, Ford's luxury vehicle brand, but half the size. In the Lincoln vehicles, the standout display is 48in and is a pillar-to-pillar command center with modular widgets. Ford says the omission is due to the fact that everything an Expedition customer needs can fit neatly into the single screen, making the other half redundant. Sure, but if you’re aware of the larger screen found in the Navigator - which shares a platform with the Expedition - its absence is noticeable. Even if you aren’t, the negative space on the dashboard stands out as if something is missing.
In any case, the Expedition is set up with a number of other tech features like a connectivity package, which makes the vehicle a mobile wifi hotspot. Those thoroughly entrenched in the Google software ecosystem will be pleased to discover the package also includes apps they frequently use, and are included natively in the SUV’s touchscreen. They can log in and take full advantage of apps like Google Maps as well as the suite of Google Play programs. Also, as this is a family adventure vehicle made for road trips, BlueCruise, Ford’s hands-free highway driving assist, makes it onto more Expedition trims than before, and is upgraded from 1.0 to Blue Cruise 1.4.
While primarily a three-row people hauler, the Expedition is often used as a base camp for activities, and much of the redesign is in service of this function. Along with a modernized look, the Expedition’s big new exterior feature is a split gate rear door, which sees the traditional lift gate married to a truck-like flip-down tailgate. Not only is this convenient for cargo access, the modular tailgate is built for seating or for use as a versatile platform in a camp setting. Ford also has a number of “linger longer lighting” nodes incorporated throughout the Expedition so that the party can keep going past sundown. Say that three times fast.
The interior has also been redesigned to maximize utility, with features like mounts on the backs of the front row for mobile devices, a powered sliding center console to reveal more cabin storage and a cabin that’s easily configured to maximize gear storage.
We’re excited to see if the Expedition ends up being the all-in-one vehicle solution for families as Ford seems to intend, and we’re particularly eager to see how the new Tremor model fares when actually put to the test. The new SUV arrives later next year, ready for soccer season.
