TG learns to drive: mock assessment

Published: 04 Oct 2013

Today was not only my final day of training, but it was also the day I took a mock test with instructor Ian Brett.

The result? Fail. Six minors and two majors.

I don't want to play this game anymore.

Ian was very polite as he broke the news to me. "You got very flustered as you reversed around the corner Nicola, and it was extremely close to the curb."

I know Ian, I know. Reversing around corners is the source of my ruin and I vow never to do it when (actually, if) I get my licence. Never. I will drive around one million blocks before I reverse around a corner. I will turn many times before you will get me to rewind around a curve.

The second major was a mere misunderstanding... in my mind, anyway. Ian told me to ignore the yellow line and pull up on the left when it was safe to do so. So I did, happily ignoring the yellow line and pulling right up onto the flat curb. Fail.

I felt a bit deflated as I said goodbye to Ian, but Jim brought me in for a cup of tea and talked me through everything he taught me this week. It helped.

If only everyone had an instructor like Jim.

My test is at 9am on Monday morning - and I only have one thought about it. This is going to be a long weekend.
