Wait, what? Porsche might build a new combustion-engined SUV

First there was Cayenne, then came the Macan. By 2030, there might be another

Published: 12 Mar 2025

Porsche is committed to electrified SUVs. Really is. It makes no apologies for filling the Macan exclusively with volts. And yet, it might be filling an entirely new SUV with a series of expertly controlled explosions.

That’s right, the Cayenne and Macan might be getting a naughty new sibling. Naughty because… well, combustion, right?

“In order to make the Macan better in every way, Porsche decided early on to fully electrify the model line. Porsche stands by this decision,” said… Porsche. “At the same time, Porsche is continuously monitoring market development and customer demand.”

Which means it’ll happily tweak its march into full electrification in the medium-term if necessary. “For example, the sports car manufacturer is currently evaluating an independent model line in the SUV segment with combustion and hybrid powertrains.”

Porsche hasn’t clarified what size this independent model line will take, what form of combustion and hybrid engines will power it, nor what it’ll even look like. It only said that it'll “have a new design and Porsche’s characteristic profile and would benefit from synergies”. Yeah, exactly.

We’ll have to wait a while before we see or (quite literally) hear anything more, because it’s still up for discussion at this stage, and even if given the greenlight (very likely otherwise they wouldn’t have said anything), it’s being slotted in for a launch towards the end of this decade.
