Startech has fixed the Land Rover Discovery's number plate

What’s the best value option when you’re speccing a new Land Rover Discovery? Probably not the £3,700 split-spoke 22s. Nor the £425 gesture-powered tailgate.

Nope, the greatest VFM lies away from Land Rover’s official configurator and on Startech’s website. The not-always-subtle tuner of SUVs has potentially played a blinder by sorting out the Disco 5’s controversial rear number plate.

If you need a reminder, it’s a piece of design that’s irked many and pleased few. Of all the latest Disco’s nods to its precessors, its offset plate is the most visually awkward, and for a mere 809 euros – a smidge over £700, at the moment – Startech will provide ‘item number LR5-410-00’, a boot lid insert that puts the plate rightfully central.

It even functions alongside the reversing camera. Startech is quite excited about its development. “SYMMETRY!” reads its website. “The new STARTECH boot lid insert is centring the license plate into a perfect symmetry.”

Genius? Or does it suddenly make LR’s solution look characterful?
