Ready the packed lunches! VW's new California will cost from £63,376

Is it too soon to start planning for the summer of ‘25? Volkswagen has confirmed the pricing and powertrain structures for its next-generation California, so it’s now just a question of Cornwall or Cumbria.

Three trim levels are available from launch: ‘Beach’ (£63,376), ‘Coast’ (£70,576) and ‘Ocean’ (£77,476). All will be offered with a 148bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine and a seven-speed DSG gearbox. Or, for an extra three-ish grand, the latter two can be had with 201bhp petrol alternatives.

Wait a little longer and the lineup will also welcome a 242bhp plug-in hybrid. That will become the first model built atop the MQB platform to adopt the new 4MOTION all-wheel drive system.

Inside your new home from home, you’ll find a pop-up roof with an openable front window, two side windows with mosquito nets and sliding doors that unearth a refreshed kitchen and foldable table.

There’s a new 5in portrait touch display on the passenger’s side that controls the various camping functions, such as power and water levels, and a total of six 45-watt USB-C ports dotted throughout. Removable rear seats can also be specced in place of the standard rear bench.

The accessory toy box is plentiful too and includes folding chairs, camping batteries or upgrades to the fridge. The Coast and Ocean versions also get a 28-litre fresh water tank and a 230V exterior socket.

Volkswagen will begin deliveries this winter. Excellent. How about... Cornwall and Cumbria?
