The Laffite G-Tec X-Road wants to shame all other uber-SUVs

A 6.2-litre V8, 710bhp and actual off-road ability…

Published: 23 Jan 2020

Recognise the hulking shape that presents itself before you? Nope? How about if we mention the name Zarooq Sand Racer? Still no, probably. Anyway, for reasons unknown to us, this off-road supercar thing is now known as the Laffite G-Tec X-Road.

We first saw the X-Road (then referred to as the Sand Racer) in rendered images back in 2017, but this time it definitely exists and is definitely available to order through a Los Angeles-based company known as Laffite Supercars. Definitely. Apparently. Not that we’re sceptical of course.

According to Laffite, 30 examples of the X-Road will be built in total, and customers who pay the $465,000 base price will be able to choose a power output somewhere between 463bhp and 710bhp. Crikey.

That grunt comes from a GM-sourced 6.2-litre LS3 V8 and is transferred to the rear-wheels only – in true Baja racer style. Buyers can also choose between a five-speed sequential or a six-speed paddle shift gearbox. Top speed is limited to 143mph – most likely thanks to those chunky BFGoodrich tyres.

The chassis has been developed by G-Tec (hence the name addendum) and there’s 17-inches of suspension travel for serious off-road goodness.

But wait – Laffite also says the X-Road will be available as a full EV too. Yep, for the bargain price of just $545,000, Spanish company QEV Technologies will come in and fit a 454bhp electric motor and a 60kWh battery for 200-miles of range. Where the V8-engined X-Road weighs 1,300kg, though, the EV tips the scales at 1,630kg.

Deliveries are scheduled to start at the end of 2020, and we genuinely hope this thing happens. It could be very fun indeed.
