Watch the Ferrari Daytona SP3's 'eyelid' headlights open and close
Coolest bit of supercar theatre of modern times? You be the judge
Pop up headlights. Not a day goes past when we don’t lament their passing. Fortunately, Ferrari is here to ease our pain with easily the most interesting headlight arrangement in the post pop-up era.
They belong to the Daytona SP3, the third model in Ferrari’s retro-inspired Icona range, following the windscreenless Monza SP1 and SP2. Retracting panels act like eyelids, revealing the full beam when you switch them on, and giving the car a rather sleepy appearance when you don’t. Still, this is the sort of supercar theatre we’re here for.
In case you needed reminding the Daytona SP3 is a non-hybrid, mid-engine 828bhp supercar powered by a naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 that revs to 9,500rpm. Only 599 will be built, costing £2m each… and we’ve driven one. No seriously, we just can’t tell you about it yet.
Check back in on 31 July at 11pm (BST) when you can read our full road test and watch our video review, and in the meantime let us know in the comments below your favourite headlights of all time.
