Stefano Domenicali is Lamborghini's new boss

Stephan out, Stefano in: former Ferrari F1 man replaces Winkelmann at Lamborghini

Published: 23 Feb 2016

Big news from Lamborghini this morning, as it crowns its new president and CEO.

And you ought to recognise his face. Stefano Domenicali is the man you’ve likely seen on TV, as former boss of Ferrari’s F1 team, on the receiving end of tough questions from new TG man Eddie Jordan.

He doesn’t come directly from Ferrari - having worked with Audi and the FIA since - but the jump across the Emilia-Romagna region is still something that could ruffle a few feathers.

Domenicali replaces Stephan Winkelmann, whose exit has been rumoured for a little while, and who travels in the opposite direction to his successor, to head Audi’s Quattro division.

Here’s Rupert Stadler, chairman of Lamborghini’s board: “Over the past eleven years Stephan Winkelmann has transformed Lamborghini into a global leader in the manufacture of super sports cars. His successor, who also possesses a wealth of experience in this area, will be continuing this success.”

Domenicali has some big - albeit beautifully tailored - shoes to fill. Under Winkelmann, Lamborghini has doubled its sales and trebled its turnover, while its number of employees has also gone up two-fold. Lamborghini even has Italy’s Top Employer 2016 certificate.

Winkelmann joined with the Gallardo and Murcielago in the range, and leaves with numerous versions of their replacements on the books and a whole new model, the Urus SUV, close to production. You can see his greatest hits here.

Over to Domenicali: "I am very excited to be taking on the challenges of this great legacy. It is now my duty to continue the successes that my predecessor Stephan Winkelmann achieved for Automobili Lamborghini."

Reckon it’s a good move? What should Domenicali’s first to-do list look like?
