Is this the most American Mustang ever built?

One-off, 627bhp ‘Apollo Edition’ pony car celebrates Apollo space mission. With lights and power

Published: 16 Jul 2015

It has LED underbody lightning to “symbolize atmospheric re-entry”. It has bespoke, black and white rocket-esque paint. It has a massive great supercharger to boost power.

Ladies and gentlemen, please hum along your finest interpretation of Team America’s theme tune, and be upstanding for the ‘Apollo Edition’ Ford Mustang.

It’s… the most American thing we’ve seen for a while. It’s also strangely compelling. It's a one-off that'll soon be auctioned, with Ford donating the proceeds towards the Experimental Aircraft Association youth education programmes.

And it's inspired by space. Not in the traditional automotive sense of, y'know, legroom and boot capacity, but by NASA's Apollo missions.

So the Apollo Edition 'Stang comes with a non-production paintjob with a “creative connection” to the NASA Apollo programme, a new carbon fibre front splitter, rear diffuser, rocker mouldings, and, of course, that underbody lighting.

Then comes the power. Ford has added its performance pack to this ‘Stang, including a Ford Performance supercharger, a new exhaust system, sports suspension, bigger Brembo brakes and 21in ‘performance’ wheels. As such, it now produces 627bhp and 540lb ft of torque – considerably more than the 526bhp of the new GT350 and GT350R.

Inside you will find performance gauges, a modified instrument cluster, new sill plates and embroidered elements in the seats, trim and floor mats. Sadly the gloveboxes are not stuffed with dehydrated space-food.

This Mustang follows an actually quite long line of special, aircraft-themed, charity Mustangs all auctioned off for good causes. In 2008, we saw an F22 Raptor-inspired Mustang, and, in 2009, one in honour of WWII aircraft. 2010 saw the SR71 homage, while in 2014 we witnessed the might of the F-35 Lightning Edition II.

A Ford Mustang. With ‘USA’ plastered down the side, a supercharger and rocket-esque underbody lightning. If you’re interested, it’ll be auctioned on 23 July at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Prepare for lift-off.
