This is the new Ford GT in Gulf livery

Gulf Oil's legendary powder-blue-and-marigold paint scheme has been replicated on everything from McLaren P1s to Tata Nanos. But the car that made that very particular colour palette famous was the Ford GT40.

And now, after the reveal of its grandson - the 600bhp twin-turbo Ford GT - at Detroit, TG's favourite crafty internet wizard Jon Sibal has cooked one up in Gulf-spec blue-and-orange. We think you'll agree this is a good thing.

The legendary livery became famous back in the Sixties, worn by a number of Ford GT40s that became famous not just for looking drop-dead gorgeous, but for being incredible successful race cars.

Chassis number #1075 was the first car to record back-to-back overall wins at Le Mans in '68 and '69, and also went on to win the BOAC International 500, Spa 1000-kilometre, and the Watkins Glen six-hour. In 1969 it also won the Sebring 12-hour race. Not a bad CV.

Here's hoping the new GT can live up to the reputation of its grandpappy. Now, 2016 will just so happen to be exactly 50 years since the Ford first ran a GT40 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Wouldn't that make rather convenient timing for a Ford GT return to Le Mans? If they do, let's just hope they've got some orange and blue paint tins lying around the garage...
