Lamborghini reveals new Gallardo Squadra Corse

It might be nearly ten years old - and due for replacement soon - but nobody told the Gallardo you have to grow old gracefully. This is a Lamborghini, don't forget, and so we come to this: the brand new Gallardo LP 570-4 ‘Squadra Corse'.

Taking its name after Lamborghini's new motorsport department - the same chaps who look after everything from GT3 to the Super Trofeo championship - the newest Gallardo now becomes the most hardcore model in the line-up. And unsurprisingly, it's closely allied to those race cars.

Underneath is the standard LP 570-4 chassis, which means four-wheel-drive, a robotised e-gear six speed paddleshift auto ‘box, and a 570bhp V10 engine. Thanks to the Gallardo's lightweight construction utilising much aluminium and a forest of carbon fibre, it weighs in at 1340kg, 70kg lighter than the standard LP 560-4. And exactly the same as the Super Trofeo Stradale. And the Superleggera.

No surprise then, that the 0-62mph time mirrors the Superleggera's at 3.4 seconds, while it'll do 0-124mph in 10.4 seconds, and top out at damn-near 200mph. Whichever way you look at it, the performance is still mind-bendingly rapid.

But, the detail is in the racecar flourishes. There's a huge rear wing that develops three-times the load of the LP 560-4, and a removable engine cover with a quick release system both pinched straight from Lamborghini's racing department.

Inside, you get Alcantara elements adorning the dashboard, the central panel of the seat cushion and the backrest. The door panels, racing seats and centre console are all made from carbon fibre, along with the handbrake frame, lower rim of the steering wheel, instrument panel trim, door handles and glove box pull. As a concession to your spine, you can spec ‘comfort' seats if you so wish.

The Squadra Corse is identifiable by a decal strip along the side flanks in green, white and red - the colours of the Italian flag - while you can choose from yellow, white, grey and red as exterior colours. The wing is finished in matte black, the bonnet, front air intakes, rear diffuser and 19in forged wheels in high gloss black, and calipers are available in red, black or yellow. Lamborghini says the new Squadra Corse "brings race track emotion directly to the road, and delivers high performance and the fascination of motor racing to the street legal world". It'll make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. You want, interweb?
