Buy a real Le Mans racing car

Peugeot announced it was ending its endurance racing program in January this year, citing "financial reasons". Which is a bit rubbish - there'll be no more diesel-powered 908s farting down the Mulsanne, whistling through the Porsche Curves or thumping into Tertre Rouge. And if Toyota keeps crashing its TS030s, nothing to keep the Audi team awake...

But if you've got the cash (and the spuds) you can relive the French manufacturer's glory days with this - the very 908 HDi that Peugeot raced in 2007. And it'll cost you a bargain £1.5m.

So, what sort of numbers d'you get for a million-and-a-half quid? A 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged dual overhead camshaft V12 engine with a six-speed sequential manual paddle-shift gearbox, independent front and rear double-wishbone suspension, and four-wheel hydraulic ventilated disc brakes. In it's current state of tune, it's knocking out 700bhp and 885lb ft or torque. Less than a Veyron, you say? Well yeah, but the carbon monocoque weighs 930kg. Which is about as much as Pringle.

Want competition history? You can't handle the competition history... It debuted at Monza in '07 and took its first pole position (Minassian) and first win (Minassian/Gené). Later that year Minassian/Gené took pole position at Silverstone, then in Interlagos Gené scored the fastest race lap. The following year at Spa, Minassian/Gené/Villeneuve racked up the fastest race lap, then in 2009 Pagenaud got on pole at the same circuit.

Peugeot, who's selling the car through RM Auctions, warns "Starting and running this vehicle calls for specific equipment, third-party software licences and skills. The seller commits to providing the necessary technical support for a period of three years. This service will be provided at Peugeot Sport's normal rates for technical support".
