Spare million quid? Buy this glorious DB6 Shooting Brake

As you’ll no doubt be aware, here in the virtual TG office we absolutely love a shooting brake. And it seems the world of super high-end auctions places a similar value on coachbuilt boot space, because this wonderful Aston Martin DB6 Vantage Shooting Brake is estimated to fetch between £780,000 - £930,000 when it crosses the block next month. 

Bonhams is selling this piece of history at its Quail Motorcar Auction, and it truly is glorious. Coachbuilder Harold Radford converted just six examples of the DB6 to this specification (with two more made by FLM Panelcraft) back in the 1960s, and this particular one was commissioned for a fantastically named chap called Middleton George Charles "Middy" Train. 

Apparently, Mr Train had two main hobbies – golf and duck hunting. Of course he did. The big-booted DB6 then, complete with that wonderful roof rack, was the perfect companion. ‘Middy’ also specced almost every option, meaning this particular Aston was trimmed in blue grey leather and came complete with a Bosch Koln radio, Coolaire air conditioning and a Webasto sunroof. Lovely. 

The DB6 passed to its second owner, David L. Van Schaick, in 1976 and has been looked after by Vintage Motorsports Inc in Pennsylvania since his death. 

It’s been well-used too, with just under 50,000 miles covered by the 325bhp 4.0-litre straight-six and three-speed Borg-Warner automatic gearbox. 

Here’s hoping the next owner uses it to its full potential, right? Although perhaps with fewer duck fatalities…
