Jaguar is recreating two of the world’s most famous E-Types

Next March the legendary Jaguar E-Type will celebrate its 60th birthday. To mark the occasion, Jaguar will recreate two of the oldest, most famous E-Types it ever built. Six of each – so 12 total – and available only as a pair collectively known as the ‘E-type 60 Collection’. The price? If you have to ask…

‘9600 HP’ was a grey coupe, a prototype driven ‘flat out’ from Coventry to Geneva the night before its unveiling by the company’s then public relations manager Bob Berry. It proved so popular with Jaguar’s VIP guests that the company asked the late, great Norman Dewis to ‘drop everything’ and drive a second car – a British Racing Green roadster registered ’77 RW’ – the 700 miles to Switzerland. He did, overnight, stopping only for fuel.

Jag’s resto-mods will be based on existing 3.8-litre E-Types and “fully-restored to exclusive 60th anniversary tribute specification” by Jaguar Classic. You know, the same team behind Jag’s Lightweight E-Type, XKSS and D-Type continuations among other things.

The ‘Flat Out Grey’ coupe and ‘Drop Everything Green’ roadster will feature a number of “commemorative design details created in conjunction with Jaguar Design Director Julian Thomson”, though Jag doesn’t mention what said details might be. A plaque, no doubt, and maybe some special stitching. We’ll find out for sure next year.
