Got £1.5m to spare? This mint Porsche 959 could be the perfect investment

Following a £50k restoration, this example of Stuttgart’s 444bhp answer to the Ferrari F40 is looking for a lucky new owner

Published: 26 Jan 2024

For the anti-911 restomod activists who spend their Friday night bathing in engine oil over a glass of petrol-flavoured bubbly: how’d you like to own a Porsche 959? Well, now’s your chance… for the measly sum of around £1.5m. Time to check between the sofa cushions for loose change.

Offered by RM Sotheby’s, the car in question - chassis number 121 - is a one-of-207 ‘Komfort’ edition. That means you get air conditioning, leather upholstery and cabin insulation. Porsche even threw in seatbelts as standard, because that’s how to tempt millionaire overlords into buying, right?

Finished in a majestic shade of ‘Guard’s Red’, it even benefits from a recent fifty-grand restoration which included new fuel lines, drive belts, flywheels and throw-out bearings. If you don’t know what any of that is, it means this car has received more attention than Barbie did last summer. Which… was a lot.

Externally, the 959’s dramatic silhouette has stood the test of time. The archetypal ‘bug-eye’ headlamps partner up with a single-bar taillight unit out back - a hallmark of modern 911s - while the magnesium five-spoke alloys just scream ‘80s caricature.

The body itself was constructed using a lightweight mix of Kevlar composite and aluminium before an ‘intelligent’ four-wheel drive system was anchored down to provide some control to the power, of which there is plenty. Four hundred and forty-four of it to be precise, courtesy of a 2.8-litre flat-six. And as if that wasn’t enough, Porsche decided to stuff it with Yautja levels of tech.

So while its in-period rival, the Ferrari F40, was focused almost solely on smashing past the 200mph barrier, the 959’s engineers staggered their efforts towards amplifying its overall experience with electronics. The result? This near-40-year-old car is still quick enough to keep up with even the most fleet-footed of modern Singer models. Impressive.

But perhaps the most amazing thing about the 959 is that Porsche lost around 50 per cent on every single example which left the factory. Martin Lewis would be furious. Also, if you are reading this Martin, please loan us some money to purchase this car. Thank you.
