This gorgeous Gemballa 928 S proves that tuning companies haven’t always been bonkers

Although actually, Gemballa did consistently produce wild Porsches. Still, this one is subtle and rather lovely

Published: 19 Feb 2025

In 1979, Uwe Gemballa founded Gemballa Automobil Interieur and began taking commissions for bespoke interior modifications on Volkswagens and BMWs. You’ll probably know Uwe - who died in 2010 - more for his work with Porsches, though.

Indeed it was in 1981 that Gemballa decided to transition into the full conversions of Stuttgart's finest, releasing bodykits for the 911, 924 and 928 models. And in that very first year, the company produced the car that you see above – a really quite lovely widebody Porsche 928 S.

This particular car is now set to be auctioned off at RM Sotheby’s Miami sale, and it proves that even the wildest tuners could once produce an excellent piece of car design. The subtle widebody and BBS RS 16in wheels suit the 928 S perfectly in our opinion.

As you might imagine from a company that had mainly focussed on interiors up until this point, Gemballa also fitted white-face gauges, a Phillips stereo and a beige Gemballa-embossed steering wheel.

We should also probably mention that as it prepares to head across the block at auction, this wonderful ‘Wine Red Metallic’ creation only has 107 miles on the clock. Yep, its 296bhp 4.7-litre V8 hasn’t even been run-in. Criminal. The estimate is for somewhere between £100,000 and £140,000, and the only thing that’s stopping us rummaging down the back of the sofa straight away is that three-speed auto.

Still, we’d buy this thing for the rear arches alone.
