The AC Ace RS electric is the latest plug-in restomod
Not warmed to the electric classic scene yet? This one's a brand new car, at least
This, fine folk of the internet, is the new AC Ace RS electric. The use of italics is theirs. Any vocalised profanities at what you see are entirely yours.
It’s fair to say the electric restomod movement isn’t for everyone, but this, at the very least, is a brand new car that simply looks old. No gorgeous classics have been butchered in the name of cleaner transportation.
The newly rejuvenated AC Cars has already shown us a pair of electric AC Cobras, one with a frankly terrifying sounding 617bhp.
This Ace RS is for those wishing to slink through life in a slightly more clandestine manner, the Cobra’s flexing muscles gone and a purer round-headlamped classic body in their place.
It has less power, too. A 38kWh battery yields 308bhp and 369lb ft peaks – broadly what you get out of a top spec BMW Z4. That brings a 5.5secs 0-62mph time and 200-mile fully charged range figure.
Far from being a controversial side project for AC, this is the future of AC (the italics are ours this time). “Our move to electric power has proved to be more important for the brand than anything else we’ve attempted before,” says AC chief exec Alan Lubinsky.
“The combination of our pedigree with a new, fully electric drivetrain means that we’re ready to offer brand new cars that are undeniably historic in character yet thoroughly modern in their powertrain and performance.
“The interest around the world in our new electric cars from has been tremendous and has proved that developing a bespoke EV powertrain is the right approach in ensuring the future success of AC Cars.”
