Question of the Week

These are your dream pick-up trucks, and some of them are *wild*

V8-powered saloon conversions, a hilarious Bugatti-with-load-bed... TG readers get creative

Published: 05 Jul 2024

On Monday, we asked you lot which car you think should be sold as a pick-up truck, and we had plenty of reason to believe that the comment section would pile with epic suggestions. In the end, we weren’t wrong.

Let’s dive straight in with Jay Kay’s excellent response: “I’d want to see a Dodge Charger Hellcat Redeye Widebody Jailbreak converted. Because the TRX Ram makes too much sense, and a car with six names as a pick-up is just cool. You’ll also be wanting as little weight on the rear tyres as possible for a drag truck that can lift its front tyres off the ground.”

Sticking with the big American theme, here’s Al Kim’s vote: “I vote for reviving the Coupe Utility concept, and because the Corvette would be a tricky proposition on account of its engine having migrated behind the cabin (a front-loader pick-up would be a thing to behold though), I'm going to suggest converting the Ford Mustang into a modern-day Ranchero. It might need an extra foot or so in length, but hey, the Mustang can take it. You can have either the ‘Here Comes America’ spec V8, with all the associated aftermarket potential, or the penny-pinching four-pot.”

We also appreciated Danny’s idea to revive a car we sorely miss: “The Ford Fiesta. Only as an excuse to bring it back.”

On the opposite end of the spectrum to the tiny hatch, here’s Mish’s idea: “A Bugatti Bolide. People would be able to get to their destination quickly enough while also still being able to listen to the wonderful W16. And because there would be so much power, farmers would be able to get from A to B so quickly.”

OK, so that might never happen. But Peterson’s idea just might: “Let’s cater to the tastes of the working man of today by transforming a Mercedes Maybach S680 into an ute. Loads of power that’s never going to be used, even smaller bed, even more luxury; a guaranteed hit with the truck buying public.”

It’s also nice to see that some haven’t lost their humour, like TBP: “Toyota Century pick-up. For no other reason than I think it would look hilarious.”

We very much agree. Just as we do with MJC’s fantastic sales pitch: “The McMurtry Speirling. Pop a truck bed cover on it and the council will be paying you for cleaning their roads in record time (some additional modifications required).”

Our final comment of the week comes from Forsh, who’s gone with a retro Brit suggestion: “Restomod Vauxhall Nova. Two-door saloon converted into a pick-up in Glacier White with a red top. Borbet A wheels and Recaro seats also.”

Thank you for all your wonderfully creative ideas this week. The next Question of the Week drops on Monday. See you there?
