Question of the Week

These are the best on-screen car chases according to TG readers

With mentions for the Bond and Mission Impossible franchises to some wonderfully quirky left-field options, here are the latest Question of the Week results

Published: 31 May 2024

In the latest edition of our running Question of the Week series, we wanted to know which on-screen car chase sequence you thought was the best of the bunch. It’s not like you’re short on options, either, with some of the all-time greats such as Bullitt, The Italian Job (original, obviously) and Baby Driver throwing up plenty of food for thought.

Let’s kick off with Paul Esthete’s left-field choice: “The first four minutes of Quantum of Solace. Danger, speed, adrenaline, stunts and amazing cars to see and hear. Nothing else comes close.”

A little more love for Bond, did you say? Alex Bourne was only happy to oblige: “I know it’s not a good film but Die Another Day has that spectacular chase on ice. It’s a great back and forth of weapons and gizmos, and the fact the team got a real Vanquish and XKR to drive and fight on ice is quite awe-inspiring.”

There’s also a series of movies made by some bloke called Tom Cruise, which tend to have some moderately good action scenes in them. Karol Jalowy said: “The chase I enjoyed the most was the one in the latest Mission Impossible. It was action-packed, maybe a little naive, but very entertaining.”

OK, now how about one that’s properly quirky? “For me, the chase between the modified Peugeot 406 and the W124 500Es at the end of the first Taxi has got to be up there,” says Inventive Username. “Akhenaton's scratch-tastic soundtrack helps things a great deal.”

And rounding off with one final curveball choice, here’s Rich’s comment: “One of my favourites is the Porsche 911 vs Camaro Z28 scene in No Man's Land. Speeding through a small car park in a stolen silver 911 while being chased by other car thieves in a V8 Camaro with a shotgun pointing out of the window. Some great sideways action, tense music and great acting.”

Some wonderful choices in there, and plenty of votes which we weren’t even expecting to win some favour. We’ll be back on Monday for the next one folks. See you there.
