Question of the Week

TG readers say the Dodge Viper ACR is America’s greatest track car

No surprises there, considering its ‘Ring time still ranks high almost eight years on

Published: 21 Feb 2025

This week's question asked readers what they thought was America’s greatest-ever track car, and a majority verdict went to the Dodge Viper ACR. No huge shocks there.

One of those votes came in from Juxtaposed, who said: “It was shockingly fast when it came out and still is. The 7m 01s ‘Ring lap came on the very first attempt on cold tyres. Also, special points just for that engine, which is the pinnacle of 'no replacement for displacement' with its massive 8.4 litres.”

Michael Wilkie was also in favour of the V10 great: “My immediate thought is the Viper ACR since it was breaking records seven or eight years ago. Most of the new ZR1’s records are on US tracks as of now, but I’m curious to see how fast the ‘Vette will be on the Nürburgring.”

Meanwhile, Dean Grant seems to think the Chevy has what it takes: “The ZR1 has all the right elements: a twin-turbo flat-plane V8, low weight and lots of downforce. It’s almost like they had a wishlist and worked backwards.”

Next up is Patrick Pringlès Taylor: “Right now it’s got to be the Czinger 21C. It has the fastest Laguna Seca and COTA lap times, and it’s even beaten the Rimac at Goodwood. As for the best-ever, I’d say the C7 ZR1 because it has racing pedigree from the C7.R, which was super consistent and one of the most approachable GT3 class cars of any era.”

Kid Carspotting offered a more left-field answer, albeit an entirely valid one: “The Dodge Charger Daytona. It broke lots of records, most notably being the first NASCAR to hit 200mph. It was also the first time Americans had heard of aerodynamics.”

We’ll round off our list with a short and sweet comment from Scott Dickens, which we think might be the right answer: “Lightning McQueen.”
