Question of the Week: which retro classic should be remade as a modern EV?

Renault has finally revealed its reincarnation of the much-loved 5, and despite the refreshed looks and completely unrelated drivetrain, it seems to have taken the baton from its predecessor and carried it into the present day almost seamlessly.

Which got us thinking: which retro car would Top Gear readers most like to see an electrified remake of? There's a huge amount to play with here since anything older than 20 years old is considered a ‘classic’. But let’s restrict it slightly to anything made in the twentieth century. Where do we even begin? 

Perhaps the least favourable car category for a re-energised overhaul would be anything sporty or known for its engine and gearbox pairing. Say, for example, most traditional V12 Ferraris, or any number of great air-cooled flat-six Porsche 911s. 

The same applies to most cars focused on lightweight minimalism; think early British roadsters or black and white French hot hatchbacks. We’d agree entirely with this since the added weight and increased power completely alter the characteristics of what makes these cars so… characterful.

Things appear much more fruitful when you move toward the grand tourer or super saloon classes, where more focus is applied to covering distances and settling in for the long haul, as opposed to savouring every ounce of mechanical rigour. Pre-historic Bentleys, or 100-year-old Rolls-Royces seem to fit the bill perfectly. Dare we say, even a classic Bimmer like the E9?
