Question of the Week: which racetrack would you buy if you could?
The Nürburgring or Spa Francorchamps? Laguna Seca or Suzuka? Perhaps you’ll vote for an abandoned local track from the archives? The comment section awaits…
There’s no feeling quite like a well-timed kiss of an apex, or the perfect exit from a complicated sequence of corners, or avoiding stalling it on the opening lap in front of thousands. Racing? Yeah, pretty cool, and the circuits aren't bad either.
Willow Springs is one of them, and we recently covered the news that it’s going under the hammer for an as-yet undisclosed fee. A smart guess would be a few million quid at least, and in return you’ll get 2.5 miles of paved road, an enormous amount of history, plus you can say you own one of the fastest bits of tarmac in the entirety of North America.
Which got us thinking: which racetrack would you most want to own if you had a blank cheque?
Let’s start with one of the obvious choices here: the Nürburgring. Stretching nearly 13 miles in length, depending on the track layout selected, you’ll have to circumnavigate nearly 150 corners before you can say you’ve completed one full lap. It’s a labyrinth. A really, really terrifying labyrinth.
How about a slightly down-scaled approach? Say… Brand’s Hatch. Nestled deep within the county of Kent, the track is known for hosting its fair share of touring car, superbike and even drift-themed events. It has a plentiful supply of sharp hairpins, long sweepers and even a few full-throttle sections to gather big speed.
Something tells us Fuji Speedway, Laguna Seca and Spa Francorchamps should also see a good share of the votes here, as could Interlagos, Monza and Suzuka. Perhaps Mount Panorama may even win it? Let us know which track you’d purchase and, for added points, any alterations or improvements you’d make as your first act as owner.
