Question of the Week: which Porsche 911 GT3 is your favourite?
996, 997, 991 or 992? This one won’t be easy…
Last week saw the 25th anniversary of the 911 GT3, and we want to know which is your favourite. Since you’re spoilt for choice, here’s a quick refresher course on the four generations thus far.
The story began with the 996 when Porsche decided to shelve almost all unnecessary weight and throw in a naturally aspirated flat-six based on the GT1/962 ‘Mezger’ powertrain. The suspension, brakes and aero were also upgraded, while the gearbox was lifted from the 993-gen 911 GT2 and the interior gained racing-inspired goodies like a fire extinguisher and racing harnesses. The GT3 idea was an instant hit.
After an inevitable 996.2, the 997 GT3 arrived in 2006. The fried egg headlamps were gone and the 3.6-litre flat-six now had over 400bhp, plus an 8,400rpm redline. Porsche's adaptive dampers were standard fit and there was an Alcantara-clad interior plus a centre-exit exhaust system. Oh, and it's worth remembering that the updated 997.2 eventually spawned the near-500bhp RS 4.0.
Then came the 991 GT3 in 2013, which introduced a 9,000rpm redline, forged aluminium centrelock wheels and standard rear axle steering. Controversially though, Porsche also dropped the manual gearbox in favour of a seven-speed PDK.
That decision was reversed with the 4.0-litre 991.2, which not only saw the reintroduction of the manual as a no-cost option, but also introduced the ‘Touring’ body style - for those who wanted all the drama without the rear wing.
Last but certainly not least is the 992 GT3, recently treated to a facelift to become the 992.2. Numbers remain punchy: 503bhp, 332lb ft, 0-62 in 3.4s and a top speed of 194mph. As ever with Porsche, it's all about incremental gains to make sure that this new boss is even better than the last.
Over to you then, readers. Let us know in the comments section which 911 GT3 model is your favourite and why. The very best answers will form Friday’s customary results post. Time to sift the Porsche 911 fans from the real Porsche 911 fans.
