Question of the Week

Question of the Week: what's your favourite Rolls-Royce Phantom?

Eight generations with plenty of history and class between them, and we want to know which is your pick of the bunch

Published: 20 Jan 2025

Last week, one of the car world’s suavest characters celebrated its 100th anniversary: the Rolls-Royce Phantom. From appearances in James Bond movies to forging a status as arguably the greatest luxury car in the world, it’s been a century of success for the big cruiser. But which generation is your favourite?

The first album was launched as a direct replacement for the legendary Silver Ghost and set the tone for the incredible scale of individuality offered by Rolls-Royce. With the Phantom I, customers chose their chassis and running gear before tasking their favoured coachbuilder with the exterior, something that was offered right up until the 1950s.

Another important family member is the VII, which relaunched the Phantom badge after a 13-year hiatus. It brought with it a completely fresh take on design language but still featured the long silhouette mated to a wafty V12. That it stayed in production for 14 years should tell you a thing or two about how good it was.

Or how about a completely left-field approach? Say… Jason Momoa’s electrified Phantom II. Built by British EV specialists Electrogenic, it took over 18 months to build and produces almost four times as much power as the original, retaining the vintage exterior but with a touch of modernity to the instruments inside. If it’s good enough for Khal Drogo, we daren’t say it’s not good enough for us.

Over to you, readers: which one of the eight Phantom generations is your favourite, and why? Leave your thoughts below, and expect the very best comments to feature in Friday’s recap post.
