Question of the Week

Question of the week: what’s the greatest Volvo saloon ever?

850 T5-R, S60 R or something else? You’re not short on options

Published: 03 Mar 2025

Back in August 2023, Volvo decided to stop selling all of its estate and saloon models in the UK, becoming an SUV-only brand almost overnight. Thankfully, that didn't last all that long and the estates returned last summer after a 'resurgence' in demand. Oh, and last week, we got fresh details of the forthcoming ES90 electric saloon.

Yep, the U-turn is almost complete. And while we give big and boxy Swedish estates a lot of love on these pages, the big and boxy Swedish saloons are sometimes overlooked.

So, allow us to ask you, dear reader, which is the greatest Volvo saloon of all time?

Of course there will be shouts for the 850 T5 R and the subsequent 850 R. The former was the limited edition, with a thin rear wing and dandy five-spokes, plus a 2.3-litre turbocharged five-pot tuned by Porsche to make 240bhp.

Sticking with the performance theme, there was also the brawnier mid-Noughties S60 R. The design was bob-on and it also featured a five-cylinder engine, although its output was around 300bhp and it was connected to a standard six-speed manual.

We’re not just after the quick stuff though. Perhaps you’ve got a soft spot for the four-door Amazon or you adored the family 760 Turbo? Maybe you’re a very important bizniz person and you ran a 960 or a modern S90 for a while? Pop your comment below and expect the very best of them to feature in Friday’s results post. Oh, and try not to get too distracted by all the wonderful old Volvo images in the gallery up above.
