Question of the Week: what’s the best car chase sequence in a movie?
Will you pluck from Fast and Furious’ extensive list, or opt for an all-time classic like Bullitt? The comment section awaits…
One thing you’ll always get in a Mad Max movie is a healthy dose of action sequences, usually involving a mishmash of two and four-wheelers that are about as quirky as they are dangerous. It’s wonderfully chaotic, and last week’s release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga continued the strong form.
But it got us thinking: what do you lot reckon is the greatest on-screen car action sequence? We might regret opening this can of worms, because there’s a rather sizeable catalogue to choose from.
The Fast and Furious franchise may have veered but a smidge from its early street racing days (a Fiero in space!), but we're still treated to some spectacular/entirely nonsensical (delete as you see fit) car chases. Who remembers the wrecking ball sequence in The Fate of the Furious, and Vin Diesel’s heavyweight bout with the nuclear football in the Vatican during Fast X?
The real hard-hitters in the franchise came way before these - most notably in the first few instalments of the series. Think back to the trio of blacked-out Civics hunting down an armed trucker in the first movie, or the incredible chase in Tokyo Drift which led the audience straight through Tokyo’s famous Shibuya Crossing.
There's the remake of Gone in 60 Seconds, starring Nicolas Cage as 'Memphis Raines'. Of course he'd be called that. Behind the wheel of his beloved Eleanor, Raines evades what seems to be the entirety of California’s police force - including a helicopter - in one of the most thrilling pieces of car cinema we anoraks have ever seen.
We’d also like to mention 2014’s Need for Speed. In this movie, Eleanor’s great, great-grandson has a similar starring role in evading batons and doughnuts led by street racing extraordinaire Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul). Though this scene feels a bit less frantic since Marshall is seen doing literal doughnuts for no reason other than… to allow the 5.0 to catch up.
We're not forgetting the stone cold classics, of course - Bullitt, The French Connection, Ronin, The Italian Job (The Good One, not The American One) - and of course, all of Baby Driver.
Over to you then, readers. Let us know in the comment section what your favourite car chase sequence is (not racing sequence!), and we’ll be sure to include the very best thoughts in Friday’s result post. Happy YouTubing, all.
