Question of the Week

Question of the Week: what would be your dream engine swap?

An exotic V12 in a Mazda MX-5? Koenigsegg's 600bhp 3cyl in your nan's Ford Fiesta? Let's hear your most creative ideas...

Published: 08 Apr 2024

Very rarely do a car’s exterior styling and powertrain both score a perfect 10; there’s usually some sort of compromise to be found somewhere. But what if those compromises could be bypassed, and you were allowed to completely ignore any sizing or fitting issues to throw your perfect engine into any car you so wish?

It makes for a mouthwatering prospect. Imagine the Lexus LFA's bespoke 4.8-litre V10 nestled in the middle of a first-generation Honda NSX. Or how about Ferrari's bonkers V6 hybrid setup from the 296 GTB transplanted into the car that inspired its design - the stunning 250 LM? Not one for the purists, that. And heck, if we're annoying the beards, why not consider a modified version of Mazda's 13B rotary engine in a Jaguar E-Type? Actually, that last one could work...

We aren’t even opposed to a few whackier choices, since beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that. Think Dodge Viper V10 in an old Cadillac land yacht or Koenigsegg's 'Tiny Friendly Giant' - a 600bhp three-cylinder - in a Ford Fiesta ST.

The possibilities are endless, so we want to ask you what your greatest engine and body combination would be? We must clarify that no original engine and car pairings will be considered here, so please avoid the temptation to just write “Carrera GT, because it’s perfect as is”. Think outside the box for us.

We look forward to hearing about those fantasy creations and, as usual, our very favourite comments will be published on Friday morning.
