Question of the Week

Question of the Week: what other car should be offered as a pick-up?

There are no right or wrong answers in this week’s conversation starter. But remember: the wackier, the better

Published: 01 Jul 2024

Pick-up trucks are cool. They’re also pretty usable these days, since manufacturers realised the British people needed truck bed covers and actual amenities inside before they considered purchasing one.

As a result, the UK’s pick-up market is now more populous, with headline acts including the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux and the Volkswagen Amarok. Just last week, we also learned that a Dutch coachbuilder will build a Defender 130 pick-up, while the lure of an imported GMC Hummer EV always lingers in the background for anyone who laughs in the face of Britain’s narrow roads.

But that got us thinking: which current production car would our readers like to see offered as a pick-up truck that already isn’t? There’s a lot of potential for strong comedy here, but also, plenty of room for calculated, justifiable answers.

Let’s start with the silly… like an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio pick-up. Or how about a McLaren Artura for those farmers looking to shave vital tenths off their wheat field-GP sector times?

For the less silly, what say, for instance, a Porsche Cayenne? We’ve already been given a rougher version of the 911, though very few will use it as intended. So if Porsche was to offer a similar idea with a Cayenne that’s got a flat tailgate slotted beyond the rear axle, we think it might actually be used purposefully.

Here’s another consideration for you: a Suzuki Ignis pick-up. It’s already multifaceted and endearingly gutsy, so it would feel almost natural to sling a bit more room beyond the rear seats and turn it into a modern-day interpretation of what a four-wheeled rickshaw could be.

Anyway, we look forward to seeing this post’s comment section pile up with ideas. We know you lot have a knack for creativity; here’s your chance you show it.
